Unpair your Apple Watch the right way.

If you still have the paired iPhone (best path)

1. Keep the watch and iPhone close together, and open the Watch app on the iPhone.
2. In the My Watch tab, tap All Watches at the top.
3. Tap the info button (i) next to the watch you're selling, then Unpair Apple Watch.
4. On a cellular model, choose Remove plan when asked.
5. Enter your Apple Account password — this is the step that turns off Activation Lock — and confirm.

Your iPhone makes a fresh backup of the watch automatically before erasing it, so you can restore everything to a new watch later.

If you no longer have the iPhone

1. On the watch, open Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings.
2. Then — this part is required — sign in at icloud.com, open Find Devices, select the watch, and remove it from your account. Erasing from the watch alone leaves Activation Lock on.

Verify before you sell

The watch should sit at the start-pairing screen, and it should no longer appear under your devices at icloud.com. That's what we confirm during the 5-minute verification at your appointment.
