Reset your PS5 or Xbox before it changes hands.

First — check the disc slot

It sounds obvious, and it's the single most common thing sellers forget: eject any disc before you reset or box up the console.

PlayStation 5

Step 1 — Save your saves

With PlayStation Plus, upload saves in Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Saved Data (PS5) → Cloud Storage. No subscription? Copy them to a USB drive from the same menu instead.

Step 2 — Turn off Console Sharing

Go to Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Console Sharing and Offline Play and disable it, so your account's game sharing isn't tied to hardware you no longer own.

Step 3 — Factory reset

1. Open Settings → System → System Software → Reset Options.
2. Choose Reset Your Console, then Reset.
3. Let it finish — the PS5 restarts to the first-time setup screen, with every user and all data removed.

Xbox Series X

Step 1 — Let your saves sync

Xbox saves back up to your account automatically whenever the console is online — just make sure it's been connected recently, and you're covered.

Step 2 — Reset and remove everything

1. Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system → Settings → System → Console info.
2. Choose Reset console.
3. Pick Reset and remove everything — the full wipe, not the "keep my games" option — and let it finish to the setup screen.
